The emergency contraception pill (sometimes known as the “morning after pill”) is available from Pontllanfraith Pharmacy without a prescription and if you qualify, free of charge.
If you have had unprotected sex, and are worried about getting pregnant, taking emergency hormonal contraception within 3-5 days can help prevent pregnancy.
The emergency contraceptive pill can be used if you have had sex without using contraception, or if you have had sex but there was a mistake with your usual contraception (for example, a split condom or if you forgot to take your usual contraceptive pills).
The pill should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex - the earlier it is taken, the more effective it is.
If you think you need emergency hormonal contraceptive advice come and have a confidential and anonymous consultation with our Pharmacist.
If following your consultation our Pharmacist does not believe that the morning after pill is suitable for you, they will be able to direct you to either a doctor or clinic that can help you further.
Although it is effective and there are no serious side effects of using Emergency Contraception, this form of contraception should only be used in an emergency and not on a regular basis as a first choice method of contraception.
If you need one of your regular medicines in an emergency when you are unable to contact your doctor, we may be able to help you.
Please note that we will only be able to do this in cases of genuine emergencies.
The pharmacist and our trained assistants are available for advice on all medicines and minor ailments, in private if required.
We can also give you advice on how to live a healthy life, for example, advice on how to stop smoking, or healthy diets.
We can direct you to other sources of advice and assistance if we cannot help you ourselves.
We provide a free prescription delivery service throughout the local area for those having difficulty visiting the Pharmacy which is particularly useful for housebound or disabled customers (restrictions on use apply).
Please contact us to find out more about this service.
We have a consultation area available if you’d like to discuss something in private.
We can dispense NHS repeat dispensing prescriptions issued by your doctor. Ask us for more information about this service.
We provide a free prescription collection service from the following surgeries to save you having to call into the surgery to collect it:
Oakdale Medical Centre, The Square, Central Avenue, Oakdale, NP12 0LR
Avicenna Health Centre, NP12 2YU
Pontllanfraith Health Centre, NP12 2YU
You will need to order your prescription from the surgery as usual with your repeat list or by using the internet.
The prescription will be ready for us to collect 48 hours later.
When you sign up to our prescription collection service, the surgery will be aware that we have been authorised to collect the prescription for you
